Especially for Those About to Retire … Or Thought They Were

Furthermore, financial security for the future, often referred as the “American Dream,” is increasingly out of reach for many millions.  This is especially true for those approaching retirement—a goal that has been undermined, even destroyed, by the economic crash of 2007, which robbed so many of what small wealth they had. Over the long run, a major culprit has been the replacement of pensions by the grossly inadequate 401K model, which is forcing millions of Americans to keep on working, or find marginal jobs to help pay the bills as they age, or in some cases fall into poverty, living only on a meager Social Security stipend.

As Joshua Holland recently noted, this trend “has been an integral part of what Yale political scientist Jacob Hacker called the great risk-shift, in which the burden of paying for education, healthcare and retirement has increasingly shifted from corporations and the government onto the backs of individuals and families.”

Teresa Ghilarducci, a professor of economics at the New School for Social Research writes, “The specter of downward mobility in retirement is a looming reality for both middle- and higher-income workers. Almost half of middle-class workers, 49 percent, will be poor or near poor in retirement, living on a food budget of about $5 a day.” She adds, “Seventy-five percent of Americans nearing retirement age in 2010 had less than $30,000 in their retirement accounts.”

But the situation is far from great for recent college graduates, many of whom are being crushed under student loan debt, while facing a competitive and often exploitative job market, where all too often an unpaid internship is an essential way to advance in a career. This is the first generation since the Great Depression that will make less money and have fewer resources than their parents. Perhaps because of dealing with all the stress, this generation has a prescription pill epidemic on their hands, which may be leading to a significant increase in suicides in their demographic.

Comment: Victory is inevitable. Only my religion combines euthanasia with eternal hell to back-up. Also think of my other powerful predictions as regards the civil war in Syria, and the destabilization of Israel by the rapidly breeding Ultra-Orthodox.

NPR asks if one-child policy, gendercide are good for Chinese women

  • Tue Jun 04, 2013 08:13 EST

June 4, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Seeing hundreds of millions of forced abortions, pandemic cultural misogyny, and high female suicide rates, NPR wonders if the one-child policy and sex-selective abortion aren’t a huge step forward for feminism.

While writing this story last week, on the fact that the scarcity of women means that getting married now costs Chinese men 10 years’ income, I came across a “news” article written by National Public Radio.

The author, Louisa Lim, dedicated numerous paragraphs to the argument that women – at least, the ones who survive – can now demand high “bride prices.”

“In economic terms, the relative scarcity of women is giving them bargaining power,” she wrote, at U.S. taxpayer expense.

Indeed, our National Propaganda Radio sees a panoply of economic goods stemming from the Marxists’ inhuman policy of wholesale liquidation:

These women’s demands are making China’s economy grow even faster.

“Rising sex ratios contribute to two percentage points of GDP growth,” says Xiaobo Zhang, a professor of economics at Peking University, who also works at the International Food Policy Research Institute.

His studies have found that up to 25 percent of the growth in China’s economy stems back to the effect of the rising sex ratio. Together with Shang-Jin Wei, from Columbia University, he’s also found that 30 to 48 percent of the real estate appreciation in 35 major Chinese cities is directly linked to a man’s need to acquire wealth — in the form of property — to attract a wife.

Zhang has found families with sons in areas with higher gender imbalances are more likely to be unhappy, and to have to work harder in order to be able to afford that all-important wedding gift — the apartment.

“In order to save more, families with sons must work harder. They are more likely to become entrepreneurs, more likely to take risky jobs — like working in the construction sector — more likely to work longer hours. All this contributes to economic growth,” Zhang says.”

In the interest of equal coverage, NPR presented a one-paragraph response that perhaps “women aren’t necessarily benefiting” from seeing their sex decimated.

Leta Hong Fincher, who is earning her Ph.D. in sociology from Tsinghua University, says gendercide does not economically benefit women because parents buy homes in the for their sons rather than their daughters, and “women often transfer their life savings over to the man to finance the purchase of a marital home, which is then often registered solely in the man’s name.”

In fact, not just women but the entire nation of China’s economic future has been called into question because of its shrinking population. After growing accustomed to double-digit economic growth, tied closely to the size of its workforce, the Chinese labor pool contracted for the first time last year by3.45 million. An already limited population will continue to atrophy, as men are unable to marry or have children.

The Malthusian population control measure is already changing the personality of the children who survive and, with it, the nation’s financial fortunes. A recent study found the generation born since the one-child policy was instituted in 1979 is less trusting and more pessimistic. (I couldn’t imagine why.) The generation of only children is also considered more “spoiled.”

Professor Lisa Cameron of the Monash Centre for Development Economics said, “Our data show that people born under the One Child Policy were less likely to be in more risky occupations like self-employment. Thus, there may be implications for China in terms of a decline in entrepreneurial ability.”

The overall effect will produce the same lopsided workforce in China that other east Asian and western European nations are facing today. In 1990, there were 10 workers for each retiree. By 2030, there will be three.

Will China come up with an equally draconian solution to this “population surplus”? Will the one-child policy be followed by a period of mass euthanasia?

Despite the consequences, the Chinese Communist Party has shown no sign of abandoning the policy. Reggie Littlejohn, of Women’s Rights Without Frontiers, told LifeSiteNews.com in an interview last year that the Chinese Communist Party is maintaining the policy of forced-abortion, because it “is instrumental in keeping them in power.

Of course, NPR’s utilitarian analysis would overlook the carnage of more than 300 million forced abortions and the terror of Beijing’s totalitarian state that puts them into practice, an oversight that requires moral blindness and an bias toward totalitarianism that borders on sycophancy.

Such is the state of nationally funded NPR “news.” It’s time to defund organs of the Left like public radio and television.

I think the writing on the wall answers both questions with, “Yes.”

Comment: Again, the Catholics draw the right demographic conclusion. As far as I know only my religion allows for euthanasia, and has this backed-up by eternal damnation. So China has to convert, or be destroyed.

Gendercide: In China, marriage now costs ten years’ income

BEIJING, May 31, 2013 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Thanks to a gaping gender imbalance caused by decades of sex-selective abortion, getting married in modern China may cost men in some cities ten years’ income or more. In effect, the one child policy has locked all but the economic elite out of marriage.

According to a recent survey, more than two-thirds of Chinese men do not make enough money for women to consider marrying them. Those who do will be paying the bill for years.

Before walking down the aisle, Derek Wei had to pay 68,888 yuan (more than $11,000) in a “bride price,” or dowry, to his future wife, Lucy Wang. “In an ordinary family, the betrothal gift is about $10,000,” Wang said. “To be honest, where I’m from, that’s hardly anything.”

In addition to a hefty dowry, a 2011 survey conducted by the China Association of Social Workers found that 70 percent of Chinese women expect men to provide an apartment as part of the marriage “package” that may also include a car, jewelry, or other luxuries.

An urban apartment in China alone may cost 15 years’ income.

Total marriage costs in the city of Hangzhou “were estimated at 1.78 million yuan ($290,000), whereas in Nanjing they were 1 million yuan ($163,000),” according to The Epoch Times.

The survey found that “80 percent of the single women interviewed think that it’s reasonable for men to only consider a relationship if they receive a monthly income of above 4,000 yuan.”

However, the survey found only 29 percent of men earn more than 15,000 yuan ($2,400) a month, or $28,800 a year.

Future trends look bleak as Chinese men tend to be less educated and earn less money than women, a growing trend in the United States.

Men in many of China’s rural areas, which present less earning potential and are often marked by deep poverty, have little hope of ever tying the knot.

The scarcity of women stems from the nation’s severe sexual imbalance. There are 117 men for every 100 women.

Reggie Littlejohn of Women’s Rights Without Frontiers has long warned that lifelong loneliness is one byproduct of the toxic mixture of cultural sexism and draconian population control measures.

“There are an estimated 37 million Chinese men who will never marry because their future wives were terminated before they were born,” said Littlejohn. “This gender imbalance is a powerful, driving force behind trafficking in women and sexual slavery, not only in China, but in neighboring nations as well.”

China’s population officials have boasted that, since the Communist Party initiated new measures in 1979, the one-child policy has prevented 400 million births. Littlejohn said that number was comprised of 336 million abortions, with the remainder accounted for by forced sterilizations.

According to the State Department, the number of Chinese women is further decimated, as they arethree-times more likely to commit suicide than men due to the nation’s “birth-limitation policies, and other societal factors.”

Ending sex-selective abortion was the theme of this year’s March for Life in Canada, where Littlejohn was keynote speaker.

After years of attempting to bring the most brutal form of sexual discrimination to light, she was grateful the nation’s pro-life movement highlighted forced abortion.

“Thank you,” she said. “You inspire me.”

The United Nations estimates as many as 200 million girls are “missing” worldwide due to sex-selective abortion and gendercide.

In the USA, people get abortions on demand, where in China they are forced to have them China shows the eventual consequences of leaving God and His righteousness out.

So, the people in the USA willingly participate in their own demise while in China they are forced to do so……The future seems more bleak for the USA.

Ten years’ income is a typical nest egg for someone about to retire. It is hopelessly out of range for a person to accumulate, part with, and then still be able to survive and support a family. It would take me 5-10 years to accumulate the kind of wealth they’re talking about, and I make more than the average American, let alone the average Chinese. Under these conditions, it becomes a rational choice for a man to bet his life savings on a single number of a roulette wheel, as this will give him a 2% chance of being able to marry and have a family, as opposed to the 0% chance he has trying to save up that kind of money through hard work and prudence.

Comment: Again, the Catholic readers understand the implications very well. Do non-Chinese have to fear the bare branches of China? What will happen to them if they become old and don’t have children? Confucianist religion and thus, Chinese culture, doesn’t condone euthanasia. Buddhist religion, or at least Tibetan culture, does condone euthanasia. This means that Tibet stands a good chance of turning the tables on their Chinese oppressors. Then ally to their coreligionists in Burma.

Does the Free Market lead to demographic implosion?

Ricardo and Malthus debated this in a lengthy personal correspondence. [6]

About this title:

David Ricardo and T. R. Malthus shared an endearing friendship despite a contentious divergence of opinion on many political economic issues. This volume contains the formal remnants of their differences. Ricardo analyzes, issue-by-issue, his points of divergence to Malthus’s Principles of Political Economy. Malthus’s contributions to political economics generally concern his bleak forecast that a geometrically growing population would surpass the arithmetically growing capacity of essential natural resources.

Again, the usual wordgames

That is why we argue that Sweden needs a non-colour-blind anti-racism that enables an understanding of the thought structures behind today’s exclusive Swedishness. That is what we are trying to talk about and what we intend the exhibition Warning For Race to contribute to.

Like most other people, we do not believe that separating people into race would solve any social problems. But if certain groups of people with similar backgrounds are found over and over in the lower tiers of the statistics tables, then there is a reason to seek out knowledge about it and try to understand what the consequences are.

Comment: Way too long for “race”.  Again, you cannot have it both ways. Either people can be divided up in groups, or they can’t. Return of the King makes the usual point of Swedes invading Turtle Island, but overlooks logic works two ways. If Turtle Islanders resisted Swedish immigration, they forfeit the right to prevent Swedes from doing the same. Just as logical. Both are right, and both are wrong. As I commented somewhere else:

I think the Left won’t like a very interesting alternative. Patrilinearity; using the surname. Children of Swedish men, and, lets say, Albanian women, will be counted as fully Swedish. Swedish men are defined by Swedish surnames.

The Dark Art of Racecraft

Jason Richwine’s place in the long history of research on race and IQ
MAY 13 2013, 10:39 AM ET
Mordecai Wyatt Johnson, the first black president of Howard University

Dave Weigel is one of my favorite reporters, but I think this piece on Jason Richwine, intelligence research, and “race” deserves a closer look:

Academics aren’t so concerned with the politics. But they know all too well the risks that come with research connecting IQ and race. At the start of his dissertation, Richwine thanked his three advisers — George Borjas, Christopher Jenks, and Richard Zeckhauser — for being so helpful and so bold. Borjas “helped me navigate the minefield of early graduate school,” he wrote. “Richard Zeckhauser, never someone to shy away from controversial ideas, immediately embraced my work. …”

Anyone who works in Washington and wants to explore the dark arts of race and IQ research is in the right place. The city’s a bit like a college campus, where investigating “taboo” topics is rewarded, especially on the right. A liberal squeals “racism,” and they hear the political-correctness cops (most often, the Southern Poverty Law Center) reporting a thought crime.

It is almost as though the “dark arts of race and IQ” were an untapped field of potential knowledge, not one of the most discredited fields of study in modern history. We should first be clear that there is nothing mysterious or forbidden about purporting to study race and intelligence. Indeed, despite an inability to define “race” or “intelligence,” such studies are one of the dominant intellectual strains in Western history. We forget this because its convient to believe that history begins with the Watts riots. But it’s important to remember the particular tradition that Charles Murray and Jason Richwine are working in. A brief reminder seems in order.

Here is antebellum “race realist” Josiah Clark Nott writing in 1854 to justify slavery:

That Negroes imported into, or born in, the United States become more intelligent and better developed in their physique generally than their native compatriots of Africa, every one admits; but such intelligence is easily explained by their ceaseless contact with the whites, from whom they derive much instruction; and such physical improvement may also be readily accounted for by the increased comforts with which they are supplied. In Africa, owing to their natural improvidence, the Negroes are, more frequently than not, a half-starved, and therefore half-developed race; but when they are regularly and adequately fed, they become healthier, better developed, and more humanized. Wild horses, cattle, asses, and other brutes, are greatly improved in like manner by domestication : but neither climate nor food can transmute an ass into a horse, or a buffalo into an ox.

Here is an excerpt from Madison Grant’s 1916 study The Passing of a Great Race:

These new immigrants were no longer exclusively members of the Nordic race as were the earlier ones who came of their own impulse to improve their social conditions. The transportation lines advertised America as a land flowing with milk and honey and the European governments took the opportunity to unload upon careless, wealthy and hospitable America the sweepings of their jails and asylums. The result was that the new immigration, while it still included many strong elements from the north of Europe, contained a large and increasing number of the weak, the broken and the mentally crippled of all races drawn from the lowest stratum of the Mediterranean basin and the Balkans, together with hordes of the wretched, submerged populations of the Polish Ghettos.

Our jails, insane asylums and almshouses are filled with this human flotsam and the whole tone of American life, social, moral and political has been lowered and vulgarized by them. With a pathetic and fatuous belief in the efficacy of American institutions and environment to reverse or obliterate immemorial hereditary tendencies, these newcomers were welcomed and given a share in our land and prosperity….

The result of unlimited immigration is showing plainly in the rapid decline in the birth rate of native Americans because the poorer classes of Colonial stock, where they still exist, will not bring children into the world to compete in the labor market with the Slovak, the Italian, the Syrian and the Jew. The native American is too proud to mix socially with them and is gradually withdrawing from the scene, abandoning to these aliens the land which he conquered and developed.

The man of the old stock is being crowded out of many country districts by these foreigners just as he is to-day being literally driven off the streets of New York City by the swarms of Polish Jews. These immigrants adopt the language of the native American, they wear his clothes, they steal his name and they are beginning to take his women, but they seldom adopt his religion or understand his ideals and while he is being elbowed out of his own home the American looks calmly abroad and urges on others the suicidal ethics which are exterminating his own race.

Another from Lothrop Stoddard’s 1922 work The Revolt Against Civilization and the Menace of the Underman:

In Massachusetts the birth-rate of foreign-born women is two and one-half times as high as the birth-rate among the native-bom; in New Hampshire two times; in Rhode Island one and one-half times, the most prolific of the alien stocks being Poles, Polish and Russian Jews, South Italians, and French-Canadians. What this may mean after a few generations is indicated by a calculation made by the biologist Davenport, who stated that, at present rates of reproduction, 1,000 Harvard graduates of to-day would have only fifty descendants two centuries hence, whereas 1,000 Rumanians today in Boston, at their present rate of breeding, would have 100,000 descendants in the same space of time.

To return to the more general aspect of the problem, it is clear that both in Europe and America the quality of the population is deteriorating, the more intelligent and talented strains being relatively or absolutely on the decline. Now this can mean nothing lees than a deadly menace both to civilization and the race.

More from Lothrop Stoddard‘s 1921 book The Rising Tide of Color Against White World-Supremacy:

In the United States it has been the same story. Our country, originally settled almost exclusively by Nordics, was toward the close of the nineteenth century invaded by hordes of immigrant Alpines and Mediterraneans, not to mention Asiatic elements like Levantines and Jews. As a result, the Nordic native American has been crowded out with amazing rapidity by these swarming, prolific aliens, and after two short generations he has in many of our urban areas become almost extinct.

The racial displacements induced by a changed economic or social environment are, indeed, almost incalculable. Contrary to the popular belief, nothing is more unstable than the ethnic make-up of a people. Above all, there is no more absurd fallacy than the shibboleth of the “melting-pot.” As a matter of fact, the melting-pot may mix but does not melt. Each race-type, formed ages ago, and “set” by millenniums of isolation and inbreeding, is a stubbornly persistent entity. Each type possesses a special set of characters: not merely the physical characters visible to the naked eye, but moral, intellectual, and spiritual characters as well. All these characters are transmitted substantially unchanged from generation to generation.

To be sure, where members of the same race-stock intermarry (as English and Swedish Nordics, or French and British Mediterraneans), there seems to be genuine amalgamation. In most other cases, however, the result is not a blend but a mechanical mixture. Where the parent stocks are very diverse, as in matings between whites, negroes, and Amerindians, the offspring is a mongrel — a walking chaos, so consumed by his jarring heredities that he is quite worthless. We have already viewed the mongrel and his works in Latin America.

Here is Karl Pearson in 1925 looking at Jewish immigration into Britain:

What is definitely clear, however, is that our alien Jewish boys do not form from the standpoint of intelligence a group markedly superior to the natives. But that is the sole condition under which we are prepared to admit that immigration should be allowed. Taken on the average, and regarding both sexes, this alien Jewish population is somewhat inferior physically and mentally to the native population. It is not so markedly inferior as some of those who wish to stop all immigration are inclined to assert. But we have to face the facts; we know and admit that some of the children of these alien Jews from the academic standpoint have done brilliantly, whether they have the staying powers of the native race is another question*. No breeder of cattle, however, would purchase an entire herd because he anticipated finding one or two fine specimens included in it; still less would he do it, if his byres and pastures were already full.

Far from being relegated to some musty corner of intellectual life, the Stoddard tradition, the tradition in which Jason Richwine stands, proved to be an influential force in world history. The Stoddard tradition gave us forced sterilization, “euthanasia” programs, miscegenation bans, and, ultimately, the Holocaust.

One might oppose the Stoddard tradition strictly on its tendency to birth suffering, misery, and catastrophe. But one can oppose it for simpler reasons — its practitioners have a nasty habit of being wrong. Harvard still stands. The Jews of Poland seem to understand American ideas quite well. And it was not the darker races who threatened civilization, but the cannibal Nordics rampaging under the Nazi flag. History has been deeply unkind to Jason Richwine’s spiritual ancestors. It’s comforting to think that the academics who show no interest in the “dark arts” do so out of fear of the leftist cabal. More likely, they do so to avoid being associated with a specious field of study whose primary contributions to the world include justifying slavery and inspiring genocide.

Which is not to say these authors should not be read. Pearson is especially instructive. In 1925, he claimed the Jews immigrating to Britain threatened to become a “parasitic race.” Under similar thinking, Jews were subsequently subjected to college quotas throughout America. Today, the descendants of Pearson tell us that Jews are the intellectual cream of the genetic crop.

This is what Barbara and Karen Fields mean when they talk about “racecraft.” Power must justify itself. When it is proven wrong, it simply recalibrates. Conditions and actions are explained away as the inalterable work of genetics. Yesterday’s yellow peril becomes today’s model minority. In the 1930s Jews dominated basketball because of their “Oriental background” and “flashy trickiness.” Today blacks dominate it through their animal strength and agility.

You see this shifting in Weigel’s own article, where we are told that Richwine is looking into “race.” But Hispanics are considered an ethnic group, not a race. That is because we have trouble explaining why Matt Yglesias, Sophia Vegara, Carmelo Anthony, Rosario Dawson, and Charlie Rangel can be said to comprise a separate “race.” One should also have trouble explaining why Walter White, Whoopi Goldberg, Djimon Hounsou, Jay Smooth, Mordecai Wyatt Johnson, and I are all the same “race.”

These people do share something in common — their geographic ancestry makes them potential targets of white racism. If there is any fact we are warned away from, this is it. Richwine’s theories originate from a long tradition of white racism, the tradition of Grant, Stoddard, and Pearson.  But to say this is to indict an insupportable portion of our own history and traditions. It is to remind us that the differences between us were constructed by men who sought power, and are maintained just the same.

Comment: “Race” and “intelligence” may be hard to define, but so are “racism” and “oppression”. Is abortion “racist”?  Is “Islamophobia”  a form of “racism”? Non-existence of “race” should lead to “colorblindness” not “anti-racism”. Logic and the desire for “justice” are hard to reconcile. People who are charged with “white privilege” by people who look more or less the same, but following the Jewish and Islamic religions shouldn’t organize as “Whites” but as XORGS, or another new word. Words have meaning. Scarlett Johansson is WHITER than Nikolaos Michaloliakos.

A recently introduced bill in the Illinois state Senate would require anonymous website comment posters to reveal their identities if they want to keep their comments online.

The bill, called the Internet Posting Removal Act, is sponsored by Illinois state Sen. Ira Silverstein. It states that a “web site administrator upon request shall remove any comments posted on his or her web site by an anonymous poster unless the anonymous poster agrees to attach his or her name to the post and confirms that his or her IP address, legal name, and home address are accurate.”

The Democratic lawmaker’s bill, which does not ask for or clarify requirements from entities requesting the comment removal, would take effect 90 days after becoming law.

Pseudonymous and anonymous comments have long been a critical part of U.S. public discourse, though, and the bill may be on shaky legal ground.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) noted on its website that the “right to anonymous speech is also protected well beyond the printed page.”

“Thus in 2002 the Supreme Court struck down a law requiring proselytizers to register their true names with the mayor’s office before going door-to-door,” wrote EFF, noting that the Supreme Court protects Internet commentary as it does pamphleteering.

The bill is part of a larger trend of lawmakers seeking to censor anonymous online speech.

The New York State Assembly sought the passage of a similar bill in May 2012, and Arizona lawmakers worked to ban Internet trolling altogether in April 2012. Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed the bill into law in May 2012, but only after the contentious language was cut.

Local lawmakers took similar action in Tennessee in 2012, when the Shelby County Commission pressed for a court order to reveal the identities of online commentators who posted nearly 9,000 comments on Memphis news site, Commercial Appeal.

Silverstein did not return The Daily Caller’s request for comment.

Everything Is Rigged: The Biggest Price-Fixing Scandal Ever

The Illuminati were amateurs. The second huge financial scandal of the year reveals the real international conspiracy: There’s no price the big banks can’t fix

April 25, 2013 1:00 PM ET

Conspiracy theorists of the world, believers in the hidden hands of the Rothschilds and the Masons and the Illuminati, we skeptics owe you an apology. You were right. The players may be a little different, but your basic premise is correct: The world is a rigged game. We found this out in recent months, when a series of related corruption stories spilled out of the financial sector, suggesting the world’s largest banks may be fixing the prices of, well, just about everything.

You may have heard of the Libor scandal, in which at least three – and perhaps as many as 16 – of the name-brand too-big-to-fail banks have been manipulating global interest rates, in the process messing around with the prices of upward of $500 trillion (that’s trillion, with a “t”) worth of financial instruments. When that sprawling con burst into public view last year, it was easily the biggest financial scandal in history – MIT professor Andrew Lo even said it “dwarfs by orders of magnitude any financial scam in the history of markets.”

That was bad enough, but now Libor may have a twin brother. Word has leaked out that the London-based firm ICAP, the world’s largest broker of interest-rate swaps, is being investigated by American authorities for behavior that sounds eerily reminiscent of the Libor mess. Regulators are looking into whether or not a small group of brokers at ICAP may have worked with up to 15 of the world’s largest banks to manipulate ISDAfix, a benchmark number used around the world to calculate the prices of interest-rate swaps.

Interest-rate swaps are a tool used by big cities, major corporations and sovereign governments to manage their debt, and the scale of their use is almost unimaginably massive. It’s about a $379 trillion market, meaning that any manipulation would affect a pile of assets about 100 times the size of the United States federal budget.

It should surprise no one that among the players implicated in this scheme to fix the prices of interest-rate swaps are the same megabanks – including Barclays, UBS, Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase and the Royal Bank of Scotland – that serve on the Libor panel that sets global interest rates. In fact, in recent years many of these banks have already paid multimillion-dollar settlements for anti-competitive manipulation of one form or another (in addition to Libor, some were caught up in an anti-competitive scheme, detailed in Rolling Stone last year, to rig municipal-debt service auctions). Though the jumble of financial acronyms sounds like gibberish to the layperson, the fact that there may now be price-fixing scandals involving both Libor and ISDAfix suggests a single, giant mushrooming conspiracy of collusion and price-fixing hovering under the ostensibly competitive veneer of Wall Street culture.

The Scam Wall Street Learned From the Mafia

Why? Because Libor already affects the prices of interest-rate swaps, making this a manipulation-on-manipulation situation. If the allegations prove to be right, that will mean that swap customers have been paying for two different layers of price-fixing corruption. If you can imagine paying 20 bucks for a crappy PB&J because some evil cabal of agribusiness companies colluded to fix the prices of both peanuts and peanut butter, you come close to grasping the lunacy of financial markets where both interest rates and interest-rate swaps are being manipulated at the same time, often by the same banks.

“It’s a double conspiracy,” says an amazed Michael Greenberger, a former director of the trading and markets division at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and now a professor at the University of Maryland. “It’s the height of criminality.”

The bad news didn’t stop with swaps and interest rates. In March, it also came out that two regulators – the CFTC here in the U.S. and the Madrid-based International Organization of Securities Commissions – were spurred by the Libor revelations to investigate the possibility of collusive manipulation of gold and silver prices. “Given the clubby manipulation efforts we saw in Libor benchmarks, I assume other benchmarks – many other benchmarks – are legit areas of inquiry,” CFTC Commissioner Bart Chilton said.

But the biggest shock came out of a federal courtroom at the end of March – though if you follow these matters closely, it may not have been so shocking at all – when a landmark class-action civil lawsuit against the banks for Libor-related offenses was dismissed. In that case, a federal judge accepted the banker-defendants’ incredible argument: If cities and towns and other investors lost money because of Libor manipulation, that was their own fault for ever thinking the banks were competing in the first place.

“A farce,” was one antitrust lawyer’s response to the eyebrow-raising dismissal.

“Incredible,” says Sylvia Sokol, an attorney for Constantine Cannon, a firm that specializes in antitrust cases.

All of these stories collectively pointed to the same thing: These banks, which already possess enormous power just by virtue of their financial holdings – in the United States, the top six banks, many of them the same names you see on the Libor and ISDAfix panels, own assets equivalent to 60 percent of the nation’s GDP – are beginning to realize the awesome possibilities for increased profit and political might that would come with colluding instead of competing. Moreover, it’s increasingly clear that both the criminal justice system and the civil courts may be impotent to stop them, even when they do get caught working together to game the system.

If true, that would leave us living in an era of undisguised, real-world conspiracy, in which the prices of currencies, commodities like gold and silver, even interest rates and the value of money itself, can be and may already have been dictated from above. And those who are doing it can get away with it. Forget the Illuminati – this is the real thing, and it’s no secret. You can stare right at it, anytime you want.

How polygyny works without war booty

Chinese infanticide and polygyny

Kevin MacDonald on April 15, 2013 — 4 Comments

Ron Unz has commented on my comments on China in my article on monogamy as a unique aspect of European civilization. First, I hope I didn’t give the impression that the only source for my views on China came from a novel. Actually, China was much on the minds of evolutionists when I got into the field in the early 1980s, particularly with the work of Mildred Dickemann, Richard Alexander, Bill Irons (and later Laura Betzig) on how elite males were able to have very high reproductive success via polygyny. Evolutionary anthropologists like Dickemann (“The ecology of mating systems in hypergynous dowry societies” [Social Science Information 18(2), 163-195) were showing that the stratified societies of Asia — China was an exemplar — were typified by wealthy males having large numbers of wives of different rank as well as concubines.

For example, in China during Former Chou Dynasty, the king was permittedone queen, three consorts, nine wives of second rank, twenty-seven wives of third rank and eighty-one concubines. One Tang Dynasty text reports that there were 3,000 women in the Palace seraglio; other estimates range from 1200 to 10,000 (van Gulik, 1974, p. 17, 206). …

Van Gulik’s (1974, pp. 17-18) description of Chinese Imperial Harem procedures, involving copulation of concubines on a rotating basis at appropriate times in their menstrual cycles, all carefully regulated by female supervisors to prevent deception and error, shows what could be achieved with a well-organized bureaucracy. Given nine-month pregnancies and two- or three-year lactations, it is not inconceivable that a hardworking Emperor might manage to service a  thousand women.

Such societies are hypergynous—that is, women tend to move up the social ladder, while men tend to move down. Families compete to purchase inheritance rights for their daughters via dowries; but dowries are expensive, contributing to high rates of female infanticide.  Poor families would be unable to provide dowries, but would be paid brideprice—their daughters becoming concubines with much lower prospects of inheritance. This is precisely the situation portrayed in the novel Jin Ping Mei mentioned in my article.

The shortage of women was exacerbated by polygyny at the top—polygyny drawing women upward via dowry payments and concubinage, and females being more likely to suffer mortality because, as Dickemann notes, “with too small a likelihood of finding a groom, the cost of rearing a daughter outweighed the probability of benefit.”   Males with resources become the target of dowry competition, intensified compared  to a monogamous  society because grandsons are able to be polygynous: men would be willing to pay a larger dowry with the prospect that their grandson would be relatively wealthy and polygynous. But that means that marrying females up  the social ladder becomes a financial burden, including for the upper classes and even for royalty (Q. Jiang, “Bare Branches and Social Stability,” Frontiers in the History of China 2011, 6(4): 538-561). Female infanticide  therefore becomes an attractive option. It  follows  also that polygyny exacerbated the shortage of females because it makes investment in sons more attractive, especially for families with some wealth, because successful sons are able to marry polygynously.

Polygyny was a status symbol—the prerogative of middle- and upper-class males (Jiang, unpublished MS) and hence far from universal. But it certainly existed at substantial levels and was a major reason for the shortage of females at the lower levels of society.

Polygynous marriage was legal in China, but taking concubines was not a universal practice across all classes, and no more than five percent of families included concubines during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The decision whether to take a concubine, and how many to take, was closely linked to a man’s social status and economic situation.  The higher his social status and economic situation, the more likely it was a man would take concubines. Government officials, local squires, and other prestigious figures were generally much more likely to take concubines, while many underclass poor men remained single involuntarily. 14.28% of males from the prominent Chen clan in Haining took concubines, while in the 1930s, between one third and one half of the wealthy class in Guangzhou did so. The prevalence of polygyny made finding a spouse much more difficult, in a situation where an imbalanced Chinese sex structure had already reduced the number of available females. (Jiang, 2011, Ibid.)

Polygyny was a major reason why lower status males could not find mates, both indirectly (by making female infanticide more likely because polygyny increases the payoff for investment in sons and in grandsons via dowry), but also directly via polygyny on the part of successful males. High  levels of female infanticide and polygyny were thus really part of the same Darwinian picture. Jiang also notes that female servants and maids filled the same functions as concubines, their employers having sexual access to them. Thus the local landlord may have been monogamously married, as Unz suggests, but his reproductive opportunities likely extended well beyond his wife.

These patterns continued into the 20th century. “In China, there was a permanent shortage of women, due to infanticide, female surmortality, and polygamy. Men from poor families tended to marry later and to remain celibate more often.” (“Who Married How? Modeling Marital Decisions in Early-Twentieth Century Taiwan”; S. Wang, J. Kok & Y. Chuang, Journal of Family History 33 [2008]: 430-451, [431]).

The data on China convinced me that it was radically different from Europe, resulting in a series of papers (19901995), beginning with a 1983 paperwhere China was the exemplar of what Europe was not. Again, my view is that monogamy is part of a suite of traits of critical importance for understanding the difference between the West and the  rest: Bilateral kinship, monogamy and companionate marriage implying a relatively high status for women and high investment in children, exogamy, the simple household rather than compound household, relatively low ethnocentrism and xenophobia—in short,  individualism (see discussion here, p. 26ff).

Comment: It is very surprising China never developed a conquer-the-world ideology. However, Sun zi did develop the central role of deceit in warfare. Between polygyny, polyandry and monogamy there are many intermediate positions possible.
