This is the first explicitly anti-Christian, Machiavellian concept. Here they deny the principle role to which Christ has called us. The Apostle Peter says:
“Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust. For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.” (1 Peter 2:18-23)

Now here’s a sobering though for you: the Peruvian peasant born in poverty in the Andes and dying in Communist hatred against the world goes to hell just like the wealthy, refined socialite in New York dying in his unbelief after a life of smug, and extremely comfortable,  Veuve Clicquot-sipping. It may well be that God, in His Goodness, will make the first suffer less than the second; but no amount of injustice will justify, ever, death in enmity with Christ.

God gives sufficient graces to everyone to die at peace with Him and – collaborating with His Grace – merit Paradise. The outer circumstances of one’s life never prevent his inner life to bring his soul to the eternal destination antecedently desired for her. But those who refuse to collaborate with God’s Grace and die in opposition to them must – mind this word again, and dwell on it – be punished with the ultimate punishment and be, subsequently, damned, because a good God does not allow excuses for those who reject Him.

So there we are: a shit life in a shithole*, lived in hatred, and followed by an eternity in a much shittier shithole*, and a much hotter one at that.

Take heed, obese social justice warriors, angry shithole* peasant, and effeminate socialite bishops.

You have been warned.

Everything that lives must eventually die and become again a part of the earth. The soul leaves the body and what remains will rot away and become food and sustenance for new life. The earth will reclaim its rightful property.

Our bodies are not truly ours, and never were, but instruments loaned to us, and that debt must eventually be repaid. Life and death are one, and it will go on forever until the end of the world and death itself is conquered. Fearing death is as irrational as fearing the sun coming up tomorrow. Violence and war are nothing to be feared, not even a nuclear war. Everything on Earth is trapped in a never-ending cycle of annihilation and rebirth, for it has been ordained so.

I have been told many times by people professing to be Traditional Catholics that one of my main “problems” is the fact that, as a convert, I take Catholicism way too seriously. The argument goes that as not having been raised in an ethnically Catholic home or community, I simply don’t understand that Catholicism is not supposed to be taken… as seriously as I take it.  I’ll never forget the famous Trad priest telling me to “wait five years… you’ll calm right down.”

I was always puzzled by this critique, as I perceive myself to be lukewarm at best.  I don’t do even remotely what I could, and often don’t do what the Church teaches should be the bare minimum for a person in my position.

Well, here is a math lesson that I hope will scare the absolute crap out of every person that reads it.  If love of God won’t motivate someone, so be it.  Let’s use abject terror.

And that abject terror comes in pondering eternity.  Infinity. Arithmetic.

To save time, I’m going to assume that everyone knows what exponents are. The power of an exponent is the number of times you multiply the number by itself.

3 ↑ 4 = 81
3×3=9
9×3=27
27×3=81

Remember how we talked about the number of angels and made a lowball guesstimate that there were SEPTILLIONS of angels (and thus demons as well?) We arrived at this number by looking at the number of stars scientists now guesstimate to be in the observable universe: 200 SEPTILLION or so. Well, one SEPTILLION is notated as:

10 ↑ 24

For reference, the earth weighs 6 SEPTILLION kilograms.

10 ↑ 80 is the number of atoms in the universe.

10 ↑ 90 is the number of grains of sand to fill the entire universe.

10 ↑ 100 is called a “googol” – note the spelling, different from the search engine.  A googol is the number of grains of sand to fill the entire universe multiplied by TEN BILLLION. To make things easier as we move forward, comprehend now the distinction between a number, and the number of DIGITS in a number.  A googol is a 100 DIGIT number.

10 ↑ 122 is the number of protons you could pack into the universe.

10 ↑ 185 is the number of Planck Volumes (the smalles volume discussed in science) in the entire universe.

A GOOGOLPLEX is 10 raised to the power of one googol: 10 ↑ googol

Now, remember the difference between a number itself, and its NOTATION, and read on.  Fill the universe with sand. On each grain of sand write TEN BILLION ZEROES. This would accomplish merely writing out the NOTATION for the number googolplex – not googolplex itself.  Not even remotely, remotely close.

Now, folks, THIS IS NOTHING. Absolutely NOTHING.

Let’s start talking about EXPONENT TOWERS. With EXPONENT TOWERS, we stack exponents on top of each other.

So 2 raised to the power of two, raised to the power of two:

2 ↑ 2 ↑ 2

Or, in exponent tower notation:

2 ↑↑ 3

With exponent towers, the second number after the arrows indicates the HEIGHT of the tower.  You start at the top, and work down to the base, so:

2 ↑ (2 x 2)
= 2 ↑ 4
= 16

“Meh,” you might say.  But let’s look at 3 ↑↑ 4

Remember, three cubed is 27, so do that operation at the top of the tower first:

3 ↑ 3 ↑ 27

Now, three raised to the POWER of 27 is… 7,625,597,484,987.  That’s 7.6 TRILLION.

So, 3 raised to the POWER of 7.6 TRILLION is going to yield a number that has has 3.7 TRILLION DIGITS. Remember, that isn’t the number itself – just the number of digits in its notation, written out.

If we simply increase from 3 ↑↑ 4, to 3 ↑↑ 5, so adding one more story to the exponent tower, that gets us to 3 raised to the power of a 3.7 trillion digit number. 3 multiplied by 3, 3.7 TRILLION times – not 3.7 TRILLION times 3, no, multiply three times three, and each successive PRODUCT times three…

3 x 3 = 9
9 x 3 = 27
27 x 3 = 81
81 x 3 = 243
and so on like that, over and over again, 3.7 TRILLION times. We only did four.

We have now DWARFED a googolplex.

But we’re just getting started. We are still dealing in numbers so small that they could be described as “basically nothing”.

If you go to the next level, using three up arrows instead of two, what you are doing is saying that the product of the topmost expansion is NOT merely the power that the number below it is raised to, but rather the HEIGHT OF THE EXPONENT TOWER ITSELF. So instead of 3 x 3 x 3… 3.7 TRILLION times as immediately above, what

3 ↑↑↑ 4

is saying is writing 3 raised to 3, raised to 3, raised to 3 (not multiplied by, RAISED TO) 3.7 TRILLION times. Remember, the product of the topmost tower is the HEIGHT of the next tower below it, and so on.  If you wrote this out in normal handwriting, with each “raised to the power of 3” in superscript (this blog won’t do superscript, but superscripting exponents is standard notation), the mere NOTATION of the number would reach from the earth to the sun. So, we can call this number the “Sun Tower”.  Remember, as we learned before in

the top few CENTIMETERS of this number, whose notation reaches from the earth to the surface of the sun, would be a 3.6 TRILLION DIGIT EXPONENT. And the mere NOTATION of

3 ↑↑↑ 4

would be 150 million kilometers tall.

But we’re just getting warmed up.  There is a number called g1, which is

This is getting to be almost impossible to keep up with. Just imagine the Sun Tower number raised Sun Tower number of times, and that product, let’s call it, “I’m getting scared”, being the HEIGHT of the next tower.

But we’re just getting started.

The difference between g1 and g2 is that g1 is merely the number of ARROWS in g2.  Not the height of the exponent tower – that’s child’s play – the number of ARROWS.

So if g1 is 3 ↑↑↑↑ 3, four arrows,

then g2 is

3 (with Sun Tower Number of arrows) 3

Multiply g2 all the way out, and that is the number of arrows in g3.

Mathematics stops at what is called “Graham’s Number”, which is g64.

Now, to the point of this, and I truly hope this puts terror in your heart, and that this haunts you for the rest of your life on this earth.  I hope it makes you cry.

Count to g64.

Congratulations.  You have just passed your first NANOSECOND in hell.

Nah, I’m just kidding.

You’re still AN ETERNITY AWAY from completing your first nanosecond in hell.

No article in Greek means indefinite in English

As we can see, the lack of definite article in Greek is translated by an indefinite article in English. This supports the Bible translation of the Jehovah’s Witnesses of John 1:1. More interestingly (and disturbingly!), at Bible Hub we see several Greek source texts, mixing aorists and imperfects, and mixing aorists and participles, as far as my Stedelijk Gymnasium Leiden training in Attic(not Koine!) reaches.

I agree that a Trinity nicely explains the philosophical problem of the One and the Many, but there is no way you can fit it in the Greek. You can fit it in the Latin, however. Remember, a mistake in these issues can have eternal consequences…

Hell means Honesty

I have recently written a couple of posts about religious relics being put on display here in Chicago and so I have been musing about religion in general and Christianity in specific.

I also saw a very good presentation by Sam Harris (I adore Sam Harris.) in which one of his main points was that religion basically deals with death and consoling people when loved one’s die.

The main appeal of Christianity is its promise of everlasting life, which consoles Christians when they lose a loved family member or spouse or child. This in itself is just a delusion and should only harm those with the delusion, but that is only half of what is promised by Christianity. Christians believe that all people will live forever. That’s right; there is life after death and we all get one. Unfortunately, only a tiny number of folks, those who will be “saved,” get a nice afterlife. The vast majority of people on this planet including you and me will roast in Hell unfortunately, even those who were born and died before Jesus came along. Even those who were born and died before the Hebrew Bible was written, ca. 1 BCE. Even the batshit crazy creationists believe the earth is over 6000 years old, that means people were around for 4000 years before the Bible got written and 4000 years or so before Jesus made his promises. I expect we are talking many millions of people lived and died and then were sent to Hell on a technicality. Those fools were not saved as they didn’t accept Jesus in their hearts as their savior. You can almost smell the fat sizzling if it weren’t for the reek of sulfurous fumes.

Christianity is not a nice religion. Studies show that the primary indicator of what religion a person espouses is the religion of their parents. That is we have little choice. All of those Christians are baptizing their kids before the kids can talk, let alone know what is happening.

Condemning 90+% of all people to eternal torment is terrorism. I have talked to a number of people who spent their childhoods in recurring fear because their grandparents or their friends were in the wrong religion and were going to roast in Hell. So, not only is this doctrine terrorism, it is child abuse.

Many people now say Christianity is nicer now and that as time goes on it becomes more gentle. If that is so, it is only because Christians are ignoring the Bible, which is considered by many to be the word of their God, so I can’t give much credit to people saying that a religion is much better now that they are ignoring its teachings.

I think everyone ought to be given a religious reset opportunity, kindo of a forced confirmation/opt out opportunity. It could be a sort of coming of age ceremony. We could get George Clooney to do the service. It would be short, George would merely ask : “Are you in or are you out?”

NO END TO THE PAIN

Even you, even you, my dear reader, will have to admit that existence is crammed with misfortune – and even you will have to acknowledge that this misery only increases as we get older. Things only get worse as time goes on. An obvious, observable design.

I have a suspicion that this plan continues after death, and that only constant torment awaits us in the realm beyond. This same pattern of torment persists throughout life – and afterlife. If there is a hereafter, then it is going to be horrific. When it is all said and done, eternal anguish is what humanity truly deserves.

Consider it as theistic pessimism. Only a malevolent entity could devise something as horrendous as existence – and I think that there is a horrible shock awaiting everyone after death. Surely this much agony cannot be the result of mere random chance. No ache is an accident. This much unhappiness has got be the result of a deliberate plot against you – there just isn’t any other explanation.

Your last breath is not going to end the pain, but only make things worse. I am not convinced that death is the cessation of suffering – as much as its continuance in a different form. I am certain that some evil being designed the world, and he has saved the greatest tortures for all eternity. You may not believe in an afterlife – but the Lord has got a little surprise awaiting you. Think of it as the ultimate practical joke.

There is never any end to suffering – in this world or the next. No comforter, no savior, no redeemer. You’ll see.

Social Construct

Similarly, a professor may argue that gender is nothing more than a social construct. Yet her ability to challenge this supposed social construct means that the professor gets to occupy a rational space outside the social construct. She has her own personal opinion differing from the usual social construct; an opinion that is thus not merely derived from the social construct. The professor is effectively calling the rest of us sheep, merely following the dictates of culture, while she gets to have her own self-derived opinion. She is a wondrous exception to her own rule.

Why doesn’t Satan throw in the towel? He’s a seraph, so he must know better than any other sort of creature ever could that God is doomed to crush him, and that he himself is doomed to fail. Why does he then keep roaming the world seeking the ruin of souls? Why doesn’t he save himself the trouble?

When Lucifer turns from God, he ipso facto turns from Reality, and from Truth. From that moment he is incapable of apprehending the fullness of Truth. This means that he cannot apprehend God as properly God. He cannot see God for who he really is. He can see God, to be sure, and can remember his own prelapsarian life. But he can interpret his memories of perfect virtue and his present experiences of God only under the aspect of his turn from Truth; which is to say, only under the aspect of a purblind, partial, distorted image of Reality. It is a flat image, that has lost the dimension of ultimacy – of God’s eternity, omnipotence, omniscience, ubiquity, and so forth. It no longer exists for him; it is to him a meaningless notion, a nullity. Satan sees that God is powerful, but does not understand what it means that God is omnipotent.

He therefore cannot believe that God – God properly so called, the God of whom the Philosophers, Israel, the Church and her prophets, apostles, saints and mystics all speak – actually exists. Satan simply, honestly does not see that he has a King. He sees God, but does not register the fact of the righteousness of God’s reign. He sees God as a tyrant, no greater in principle than he is, whom he could usurp, and would.

He is an atheist.

So is he a nominalist, and a nihilist. For, having turned from Reality, he has turned to nothingness. All that remains to him then is himself, looking out upon nothing. And he takes this solitude as basic to being. So is he an unwitting solipsist. And so sophistical a solipsist is he, that no contravening item can penetrate to his awareness.

He is, in short, deluded – and cannot understand that this is so.

You can’t turn to a Light that you can’t see (except by accident). So Satan can’t turn back to God. He sees nothing there to turn back to. He and his minions literally can’t see God, or the Good. They see only perversions of the Good, and of God; and it is to these perversions that they adhere, and abhere. They seek the Less than Optimal, mistaking it for the Optimal; they are idolaters. Presumably they are honest errants, honest idolaters. They cannot turn from their moral course, because they cannot see that there is any other sort of course open to them. As with the Truth and the Light, the Way for them is nonexistent.

Satan cannot turn back.

In this he is unlike men. Men inherit a turn from Reality as Original Sin, to be sure; this is the Body of Death. That Body obscures Reality, so that men see it only as through a glass, and darkly. Even to apprehend its existence, they need experience or education or training. This they seek by their nature, which was first made (like those of all creatures) for and toward God. But men are far less scient than angels, and have a much harder time attaining certainty about anything. It behooves them if they want to live then to be ever doubtful, to fret and worry always whether they have got things wrong after all. Men are so constituted in their biological essences as never to be able to choose irrevocably while they yet live. All their dogmas are held provisionally, and are subject to change depending on further developments. Men can therefore amend their policies, and do. They can at every moment of their lives turn from one path to another, diametrically opposite path.

This turn is presumably available to Lucifer too, ontologically; it is prevented to him only epistemologically. His phenomenal life is devoid of enchantment; for him, there is no musical aspect to being, nor for that matter any ultimately rational aspect to it, no Rational Ultimate. Reality is for him essentially unintelligible; for in turning from Reality and Truth, you turn from all that is intelligible toward what is not; toward chaos and non-being. Turning from the Good himself, and from Reality per se, you turn effectually away from moral realism, and become a radical moral skeptic. You turn finally also from causal power, ergo from actuality: for the efficacious use of power depends upon its apt application to Reality as it is in itself. So, Satan is dwindling toward the zero of action, toward his tomb of icy immobility.

Satan does not throw in the towel, then, because his certainty in the competence of his science blinds him both to its incompetence and to the fact of his error. Being blind to the Real Good he is alive exclusively to a False Good, and seeks it. He seeks for all creatures – i.e., for his own environment of actual entities, his own world of which he is the ruler – a radical freedom from what he sees as the unjust strictures of fantastic religious cults whose object is strictly illusory, and whose acts and works are therefore insane and evil.

It goes like this, then:

1. The comprehension of seraphic science leads to overconfidence – to Pride. Thanks to his comprehension, the seraph has no true reason to feel any doubt in his own powers of apprehension or knowledge or understanding.
2. But even comprehensive science cannot see what is not – it cannot see or a fortioriconcretely or vividly understand evil or disorder ex ante – cannot see what it is like to be wicked, as compared to what it is like to be virtuous. Ex ante, an evil option will seem to it morally indifferent, and will seem to pose no danger.
3. The innocent seraphic conscience is therefore ignorant of evil. Only ex post can any creaturely agent fully understand the character of what it has done.
4. But even having Fallen, the seraph never does fully understand what he has done as evil. He never can. He is stuck in his ignorance. Talk about a clever silly!
5. Having Fallen, the seraph is not disabused of his Pride, for he is ignorant thereof. The Prideful seraph has no idea that he is ignorant of anything; his Pride seems therefore to him, honestly, quite apt, as also do all his acts. He has no notion that he is Proud. He does not know that he does not know what he does not know.
6. The Truth, then, the Good, the Beautiful, the Real, and the Potent are to the Fallen seraph utterly invisible. He sees only their perversions, and mistakes them for the genuine articles.
7. Even after his Fall, then, the seraph does not apprehend it as such. It seems to him rather only a natural and unremarkable development of his life as it first came to him.
8. I.e., the Fallen seraph does not understand evil as evil. It looks OK to him. He does not mind his suffering, because he knows no better. His life is normal to him. To what other might he compare it?

So only the seraphim who have not Fallen, and who can observe the squalid lives of their adversaries, can understand evil concretely. Because it is a depravation of good, evil can be understood only from the perspective of that good.

Comment: Excellent explanation how and why a being far more intelligent than a mere human could even think it has a chance against Someone who is Omnipotent.
