Feminists use the word Patriarchy to describe institutionalized male privilege. However, feminism has evolved, and now largely recognizes the fact that there are many different systems of oppression. This is where the word Kyriarchy comes in. The term was created by Elisabeth Schussler Fiorenza, in 2001. This word understands all the different factors that can lead to oppression, like race, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, etc. It speaks to all inequality, not purely gender inequality, it is the system that controls all intersecting oppressions. So, if you are a straight and able-bodied individual you are privileged by that, at the same time you can be oppressed by being a transgender black women. Kyriarchy is a wider lens. It acknowledges people who do not identify as female or male and it explains how we can be both the oppressor and the oppressed.
