THE BATTLE AXE:  Suffering Circumcision? (06/08/2014)—(5.)  Covenant pertains to the transformation of Creation, of mankind, and of the living universe.  Circumcision in ones flesh is no true threat to either infants or teens becoming fully mature, experiencing emotional, mental and physical health, or being established having inner peace.  More than this, circumcision is neither an outcome nor a cause for anti-social behavior, a warped personality, weak character…

  1. {Sigh} If I had the time…

There were several covenants, but the two that matter most to us are the ones that divide the Bible in two – the Old Covenant or Testament; and the New Covenant or Testament.

The Old Covenant is that made with Abraham; the New is the expansion of that through Christ to redeem all of His people, not just national Israel ones.

You can look up the appropriate texts, if you desire.

But that’s why the Bible has two Testaments, i.e. Covenants.

      1. The orthodox view is that the covenant with Abraham is the same as the one with his descendent Jacob, to whose line the Mosaic Law was given.

This means any ideas that Muslims have that Ishmael had a covenant established with him are false.

        1. It is indeed false that Ishmael had a separate covenant specifically with him. However, even the offspring of Keturah would fall under the covenant. Maimonides held that Arabs did have the mitzvah to be circumcised, although the high style normal among Muslims/Arabs is un-halakhic. So, in fact, Jews should recircumcise them. They gain more than they bargained for.

  2. The orthodox view is that there is only one covenant line – that only the line of Abrahamic descendants who kept the faith are the heirs to the promise, i.e. the covenant.

And now, only those of whom it can be said, as of Abraham, ‘Abraham believed the Lord, and it was credited to him as righteousness’, are the spiritual descendants of Abraham, the inheritors of the new covenant, in fact. So Jews and Muslims who haven’t embraced Christ aren’t part of the new covenant.
